What are you grateful for…really grateful for. If you had the opportunity to thank someone today for something that they did for you, for a family member or friend, who would it be? How do we let our lives pass without properly showing gratitude to people who have made such an impact? Perhaps because sometimes the memories are too painful and the associations we have to the people that helped are too close. Perhaps we are vulnerable and scared or too sad to conjure up those feelings again. We are also busy with the to do’s of today and the lists for tomorrow. We can easily say we do not have enough time or enough bandwidth to reach out to the many people who have graced and continue to grace our lives whether by small encounters, deep personal relationships or assistance in life altering situations. Merely thinking about someone for whom you are grateful is a start but following through and showing real gratitude is when the exercise comes to life. I came across this video today sent out by Daily Good: News that Inspires. Their quote for the day reads:
“The roots of all goodness lie in the soil of appreciation for that goodness.” -Dalai Lama
Their motto is Be the Change and the message is to “thank someone who has touched you, and do it soon.” We do not have guarantees for how much time we will be on this Earth or for how long our loved ones will be here. We can easily be overtaken by the pace of daily living and when all the events have passed us by, we realize that we might have missed them because we were not as present in our minds and in our hearts as we intended to be. We have today and the moments immediately before us. We must try and cherish each one as though it was our last.
