This photo was taken yesterday when I took our sweet Deja out for an afternoon walk. The sky was brilliant, the light, as shown here, was perfect as the sun began to slowly descend in the sky. I turned and paused to take in what surrounded me…the beauty of creation, the stillness of the woods, the quiet, the sparkle of light on each tree branch. So often we forget to pause to take in the splendor of what is right before us because we are too busy.
I listened to a poem by Dana Faulds this morning at the conclusion of my morning meditation. It reads:
“It only takes a reminder to breathe,
a moment to be still, and just like that,
something in me settles, softens,
makes space for imperfection.
The harsh voice of judgment drops to a whisper
and I remember again that life isn’t a relay race;
that we will all cross the finish line;
that waking up to life is what
we were born for.
As many times as I forget, catch myself charging forward
without even knowing where I’m going,
that many times I can make the choice
to stop, to breathe and be, and walk
slowly into the mystery.”
I love these words -they took my breath away this morning… this idea of making space for imperfection. This is not how we readily greet each day and yet it is freeing to consider how our days would feel if we could let go of the judgement, the fear and the worry- about our our own being, about measuring up, about our kids, about how difficult it is to be a parent, a partner, a friend, a daughter, a son, a brother or a sister. You are enough! We can take moments to let this “harsh voice of judgement drop to a whisper” and let ourselves settle and soften because it feels good to do so and because in these moments we are tending to our soul and the deepest corners of our being. What have you let go of because you have been scared, what are you not taking time for because you have too much going on, what dreams are you putting on hold because they scare you and you do not know where to begin? Walking slowly in to the mystery is a start, even when we do not know where we are going. We have the choice in any moment.
